What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your OPPD Bill

OPPD (Omaha Public Power District) is one of the largest electric companies in the U.S. that is publically owned. The company services more than 13 counties in southeastern Nebraska that represents 340,000 customers. OPPD offers several options for customers that can’t pay their bills including:

  • Energy Assistance Program – Administered by the American Red Cross, the program assists eligible families with energy cost s and emergency equipment repairs.
  • Call Center Campaign – Customers from OPPD’s servicing area call in and donate funds during the two-week campaign.

How to Pay the Bill

Pay online: You can pay your OPPD bill online by visiting https://myaccount.oppd.com/SingleSignon/logon.aspx. You will need to be a registered member of the website.

Pay in person: You can pay your bill at one of nine locations in the Omaha area. The locations can be found by visiting http://www.oppd.com/ResidentialCustomers/Payment/22_000924#office.

Pay by phone: You can pay your bill over the phone by calling 1-402-536-4131 within the city limits or 1-877-536-4131 outside of Omaha. You will need you account number, credit card or debit card.

Pay by mail: You can pay your bill by mailing payments to:

Automatic bill pay: You can have you bill automatically deducted from your savings r checking account on a monthly basis. You will need to log onto your bank’s official website and set up the recurring payment.

One-time payment: You can set up payment on a one-time basis by entering your account number and zip code on the OPPD website.

How the Penalty Fees Work

OPPD charges fees for late payments, reconnection and returned checks. In the event your service is disconnected, additional fees are assessed.

  • Late payment fees: The fee for a late payment is 4% of the normal monthly rate as well as taxes.
  • Reconnection: The normal reconnection fee is $55 during normal business hours and $120 after hours and on the weekend.
  • Returned Checks: The fee associated with returned checks is $25 per occurrence.

OPPD offers several options for customer who may not be able to pay their bills. When we spoke to customer service, the first option they suggested is to call them at 1-402-536-4131 or 1-877-536-4131.

When we spoke to the customer service representative, they were informative and extremely helpful. They answered our basic questions, but did not answer customer specific questions. They instead directed us to the OPPD website. They did inform us that if you are having difficulty paying your bill, simply call the customer service number prior to your disconnect date to set-up a payment schedule.
