What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your NStar Bill

NStar is an electric company in Massachusetts. The company is owned by investors and provides gas and electric to more than 1.4 million customers. The far northeast is known for extremely cold winters so energy bills can skyrocket easily. When times are tough and your energy bill is too high, will NStar be there to help you out of debt?

How to Pay the Bill

Pay online: You can pay your NStar bill online using the one-time payment option at https://www.nstar.com/secure/nstarsecure3/loginsoap.asp?myPage=/secure/nstarsecure3/residential/payment_options/onetimepayment/otp_1.asp. You must have your account number and a valid email address to make payment. If you have more than one account with NStar, you must log in to each account to make payment.

Pay by phone: Phone payments are processed at 1-800-592-2000. Customers can use only bank accounts for phone payments. You will need to have your NStar account number, bank account number and the routing number of your bank at the time of your call.

Pay by mail: Payments by mail are processed at the NStar facility in Dallas, TX. Customers should only mail personal checks or money orders. NStar is not responsible if cash payments do not make it to the Dallas facility.

Pay in-person: In-person payments can be made at local Western Union locations. Customers will need the NStar account number to make a payment. Other payment locations may be available based on your service location.

Pay by credit card: Phone credit card payments are accepted at 1-800-566-2656. This service is provided by Western Union Speedpay. Customers must pay the service fee charged by Western Union.

How Penalty Fees Work

NStar lists all penalty fees in the rates document available on the official website.

  • Late payment charge: $10.70 of the past due bill. Calculated monthly if there is a roll-over past due amount.
  • Return payment fee: $9 per instance.
  • Restoration charge: $15 per instance.

I Can’t Make a Payment

The customer service phone number for NStar is 1-800-592-2000. Customers should call customer service to make payment arrangements before the due date or disconnect date if the due date has past.

  • Discount Rate: Customers already receiving government assistance may be eligible for reduced rates. You must apply for the Discount Rate online.
  • Fuel Assistance: If you current monthly income is less than 60% of the state’s median income, you may qualify for assistance. You must contact a Community Action Program in your area for more information. Customers may also qualify for help with telephone and gas bills.
  • LIHEAP: If you meet federal income guidelines you may qualify for the LIHEAP home energy assistance program.
