What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your MidAmerican Energy Bill

MidAmerican Energy is an electric company providing energy to Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota and Nebraska. Despite operating in different states, the company offers one large website with bill payment options and customer service documents, including a rate document for each state.

How to Pay the Bill

Making your bill payment past the due date will result in late payment fees and could lead to service interruption. It is best to contact the customer service department if you feel you’ll be late paying your bill to avoid loss of service and extra fees.

Questions About Your Billing Statement or Account?

Electric bills can be confusing. If you have questions about the fees listed on your bill, contact the customer service department at 1-888-427-5632. You can also view various rate schedules on the Rates Overview page.

How the Penalty Fees Work

We could not find any penalty fees listed on the MidAmerican energy website. We know they charge a late payment fee, and probably a returned payment fee and reconnect fee, but how much they charge is not listed. There is a sample bill on the website that shows the late payment fee is $1.65. This could be a representation of a late payment percentage of the total bill due. If that is the case, the late payment fee charged by the company is 1.5% of the total amount due.

I Can’t Make a Payment

We all have financial troubles from time to time. It is important to contact the customer service department at 1-888-427-5632 for more information on payment arrangements. If you currently use life support systems in your home, contact the company immediately to be placed on the Life Support Program.

LIHEAP: A program designed to help low-income people pay utility bills. Contact customer service or your local Department of Health and Human Services for more information.
