What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Direct Energy Bill

In 2002, electric service was deregulated in some states. This deregulation allows customers to choose who provides electric service. It also allows electric companies to compete for your business. Direct Energy is a retail electric company operating in markets where electric service has been deregulated. This means the customer has the option to choose Direct Energy from other providers in the area. Competition means lower prices and better customer service.

Direct Energy operates in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. Not all markets allow Direct Energy to sell energy. In some cases, Direct Energy sells energy products.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Direct Energy charges several penalty fees when payments are not received by the due date.

  • Late payment fees: Calculated based on the total amount past due.
  • Disconnect/reconnect: A fee may be added to your bill if service is disconnected for non-payment. Customers will have to pay the full amount due in addition to the reconnect fee before service is restored.

I Can’t Make a Payment

Direct Energy offers several options for customers having trouble making their electric bill payment.

  • Extended due date: Direct Energy will extend the due date for a small number of days if the customer promises to make payment in full by the new due date.
  • Payment plan: Some customers may be eligible to break down a past due balance into smaller payments to resolve the past due status. Contact customer service at 1-888-305-3828 for more information on the payment plan.
  • Bill payment assistance: Direct Energy works with local agencies to provide monetary assistance to some customers. Assistance is based on financial need, so customers should contact customer service for an application. Income verification will be required for acceptance in most cases.
  • LIHEAP: The LIHEAP Home Energy Assistance Program pays low-income energy customers for one year after qualification to help ease the burden of heating and cooling costs. This program is federally-funded. You must prove income to qualify.
