What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Detroit Edison Bill
Detroit Edison is an electric company serving customers in Michigan. Michigan is known for long, cold winters, which could significantly increase utility bills for several months. There is a home heating credit available for customers who meet certain income qualifications, but applications must be filed by the last day of September each year. There are other options for customers having trouble paying utility bills.
How to Pay the Bill
Remember to contact customer service before using any of the payment options listed below if you’ve received a disconnect notice.
Pay online: You can pay your Detroit Edison bill online at https://www.dteenergy.com/cso/eBill/oneTimePayments/accountPaymentList.do?destinationMapping=makePayment. You’ll need to register for an account if you have not already. Online account access is free and allows customers to modify their account and contact customer service via their account.
Pay by phone: Customers can make a phone payment to Detroit Edison at 1-800-477-4747.
Pay by mail: Mail payments should only be used if the due date for the account is at least one week away. Close dated payments could result in late payment charges applied to your account. Mail payments via personal check or money order to:

How the Penalty Fees Work
Detroit Edison does not bother to list common fees like returned payment fees and reconnect fees on the official website. These fees do exist, but customers need to contact the service department for more information on the fees.
- Late payment fee: You will be charged 2% of your past due balance if your payment is received past the due date.
I Can’t Make a Payment
Detroit Edison will work with customers to place a past due balance on a payment plan. It is best to contact the service department at 1-800-477-4747. A down-payment is required, but the remaining balance will be broken into smaller payments.
Home Heating Credit: Customer can apply for the Home Heating Credit each year before the last day of September. The program is open to low-income customers.
