How the Penalty Fees Work

Penalty fees are charged to customers who do not make payment by the due date listed on the electric bill. Additional fees are charged if service is disconnected.

  • Late payment fee: 1.5% of the past due amount or $5, whichever is higher
  • Returned check fee: $25 per instance
  • Security deposit: The total of the two highest energy bills
  • Field collection: $20 per instance
  • Meter investigation: $200 per investigation
  • Reconnect fee: $30 per instance

I Can’t Make a Payment

Wake Electric offers three choices for customers having trouble making monthly energy payments.

  • Budget billing: If you have a $0 balance, you can sign up for balanced budget billing. Wake Electric will take the average of the previous 12 months and charge that amount for 11 months. The 12th month is used as the settle month. Any unpaid amounts will be due on the 12th month.
  • Leveled billing: Leveled billing is a rolling billing system that figures a new average payment each month. The bill will not stay the same from one month to the next, but bill amounts are more predictable. The customer must have a $0 balance before signing up for this program. When you leave Wake Electric you will be responsible for all unpaid amounts.
  • Payment arrangements: Wake Electric will set-up customers on a payment plan if their account is in good standing. The cooperative reserves the right to deny payment plan options if customers have a poor payment history.
  • LIHEAP: Customers wanting to know how to qualify for energy assistance with LIHEAP should contact your local Department of Social Services. You will need to meet certain income guidelines in order to qualify for assistance.
