What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Visa Bill

Visa is one of the top four credit card companies in the United States. Visa credit cards are issued by specific banks, not the Visa company. Currently, there are 14 major banks issuing Visa credit cards. Debit cards with the Visa logo are different from Visa credit cards. While debit cardholders can use these cards in the same way a traditional Visa is used, there are no credit card fees associated with use.

Questions About Your Billing Statement or Account?

Information on your Visa card is available from the Terms and Conditions associated with your Visa card. Visa offers a small section on checkout fees on the official website, in addition to information on how to use your Visa and where Visa cards are accepted. The customer service phone number for Visa global is 1-800-847-2911.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Penalty fees for Visa credit cards are applied to your customer account for various reasons, including late payments, returned payments and breaking your set credit card limit.

  • Late payment fees: Late payment fees are typically charged as set amounts ranging from $25 to $35.
  • Returned payment fees: Returned payment fees are applied to your Visa account when a check or electronic payment is returned for insufficient funds. This fee is often in addition to fees charged by your bank.
  • Over the limit fees: If you make a charge that results in your account balance breaking your credit limit, the issuing bank may charge an over the limit fee.

I Can’t Make a Payment

If you can’t make a Visa card payment, contact the issuing bank at the number listed on the back of the card. Tell the customer service representative that you are having temporary financial troubles and want to learn more about alternative payment options. The longer you wait, the more apt the account is to be placed with a collection agency.

Will They Work With Me to Pay My Bill?

Many credit card companies will work with cardholders to make past due payments more affordable. In some cases, the issuing bank will stop interest charges or late charges in exchange for a payment plan. This reduces the long-term burden of repaying the debt.

Official Visa Statement

Visa never sets up, services, or has access to any card-holder or vendor accounts. All of that happens through Visa’s client financial institutions, the banks that issue our cards. Each bank will then have its own standards for issuing a visa card to a customer, including its own interest rate, credit lines, and debt settlement policies.

Visa Inc. plays a unique role in the payment card process. While most people are familiar with the Visa brand, many are unaware that Visa does not issue cards or oversee consumer accounts. Those functions are managed by the individual financial institutions that issue cards. Instead, Visa operates the network that allows card transactions to be processed, securely and reliably.
