Transparent Labs Review: Products, Ingredients & Cost

There’s no shortage of supplement companies out there, but Transparent Labs recently caught our attention. The company sells supplements for athletes looking to build muscle and cut fat, along with a couple of dedicated weight-loss products.

Transparent Labs says it wants to “live up to its name” by disclosing full information about its supplements. One of our first concerns, ironically, was how little the company discloses about itself or the people running it. Alongside researching the company, we dug into the ingredients they use and possible side effects, then condensed everything into this review.

What Is Transparent Labs?

Transparent Labs makes supplements aimed at athletes and people seeking weight-loss support, spanning categories like Pre Series, Protein Series, Strength Series, Core Series, Physique Series, Mind Series, Wellness Series, Raw Series, Gear, and Uncut Protein Bars, plus stacks aimed at specific goals like cutting fat or building lean muscle. The company’s name reflects its stated commitment to disclosing 100% of the ingredients in every product.

What does the science say about a few of those ingredients? A 12-week study of 30 overweight and obese men in Obesity Research found that 250mg of a 10% forskolin extract, taken twice daily, “favorably” altered body composition. Mucuna pruriens, a source of L-DOPA, may modestly boost mood through dopamine, per CNS Spectrums, though there’s no solid proof it does much beyond that. And research in Physiology & Behavior found red pepper does promote thermogenesis and may reduce appetite, but the effect is temporary — the body builds tolerance and the benefits fade.

How Did Transparent Labs Start?

For a company built around transparency, Transparent Labs shares surprisingly little about itself — there’s no “about us” link on the homepage, and the contact page offers only an email address with no company location listed. A hidden “about us” page our researchers eventually found doesn’t add much either, mostly repeating claims about using high-quality, effective ingredients.

The company was co-founded by Trevor Hiltbrand, known mainly for pitching a different product, Cerebral Success, on Shark Tank. Though most of the “sharks” passed, Barbara Corcoran invested, later writing that she backed it because Hiltbrand understood “the prevalence and danger of college kids popping un-prescribed Adderall pills to get them through their exams” and had a solution. Cerebral Success isn’t part of the Transparent Labs lineup, and Hiltbrand’s background appears to be in accounting rather than health science — which doesn’t rule out expert involvement behind the scenes, but nothing on the website suggests it either.

Transparent Labs currently holds a “B-” rating with the Better Business Bureau, reflecting both its relatively short time in business (its BBB file opened in March 2017) and a pattern of unanswered complaints. The average customer review sits at 2.5 out of 5 stars, with 21 complaints closed over the past three years.

Transparent Labs Affiliate Program

The company runs an affiliate program, though the commission structure is a bit murky — marketing materials mention up to 30%, other pages cite 20% “on the entire value of the order,” and the actual signup page lists a default rate of 15%, rising to 25% for pre-workout products. Nowhere, including the terms and conditions, is it clear how an affiliate would actually earn that advertised 30%.

General claims include 100% ingredient transparency, science-based formulations, and effective dosages. Product-specific claims include quick weight loss, boosted metabolism, and reduced cravings for Fat Burner; targeting stubborn fat and preventing muscle loss for Lean Pre-Workout; and science-based fat loss with increased basal metabolic rate for the Physique Series Fat Burner.

Common ingredients across the lineup include mucuna pruriens, synephrine HCL, coleus forskohlii, cayenne pepper, and white willow.

Do Transparent Labs Products Work?

Whether these products work comes down to the ingredients, and our research suggests the evidence is more mixed than the marketing implies.

Mucuna Pruriens

A legume also known as velvet bean, traditionally used to treat snake bites. It’s rich in L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine, and appears in Lean Pre-Workout at a labeled concentration of 98% L-DOPA.

Synephrine HCL

Chemically similar to the banned stimulant ephedrine and sometimes called bitter orange, synephrine is used in Fat Burner as a fat-burning aid. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that “only a few studies have investigated the usefulness of bitter orange as a dietary supplement for health purposes in people,” with more evidence supporting topical use for skin conditions than any internal benefit.

Coleus Forskohlii

A tropical plant that produces forskolin. Examine.com describes the research on fat loss as “promising” but still too preliminary to draw firm conclusions.

Cayenne Pepper

Its active compound, capsaicin, has been linked to pain relief and congestion relief, according to Medical News Today, along with thermogenic effects that have drawn interest for weight loss, though as noted above those effects tend to fade with continued use.

Transparent Labs Benefits and Results

Marketed benefits include full ingredient transparency, clinical backing, fat loss, increased lean muscle, and reduced appetite. We do think transparency around ingredients is a genuine plus, and the company does a solid job listing what’s in each product. That said, our researchers didn’t find much clinical evidence confirming the ingredients are effective for their stated purposes.

Transparent Labs and Weight Loss

The two weight-loss-focused products are Fat Burner and Fat Burner Stim-Free. Any weight-loss effect from cayenne pepper is likely to fade as the body builds tolerance, and while synephrine may offer some benefit, the research isn’t robust enough to confirm it — and it may not be safe for everyone.

Pricing varies by product: Mass Gainer runs $69.99 for 15 servings, Fat Burner is $49.99 for a one-month supply, Lean Pre-Workout costs $49.99 for 30 servings, and Grass-Fed Isolate is $59.99. Multi-unit discounts are available but modest, and overall pricing sits on the higher end.

Potential Transparent Labs Side Effects

The company addresses some caffeine-related side effects but downplays their seriousness for sensitive individuals, and doesn’t address the more serious risks tied to synephrine — a case report in the Texas Heart Institute Journal documented a 24-year-old man with no cardiovascular risk factors who experienced problems after taking a synephrine-containing supplement. Cayenne pepper can cause stomach irritation, sweating, flushing, and a runny nose, while mucuna pruriens commonly causes bloating and nausea, with vomiting and abnormal body movements possible in some cases.

The Bottom Line on Transparent Labs

Should you fill up your cart on the Transparent Labs website? We’re not fully convinced. We do like the full ingredient disclosure, but the company shares little about itself, prices run high, and the scientific backing for several ingredients remains thin. As with most fat-burning and pre-workout supplements, results ultimately depend far more on consistent training and a solid diet than on any single formula.
