SSI or Social Security Income is not the same as Social Security. General federal revenue is used to fund the program as opposed to Social Security taxes. The program is designed to offer income support for people who have been deemed unable to work due to mental or physical disability.

There is no cost for SSI coverage, but you will need to visit a doctor (likely on more than one occasion) to apply for and be granted income support or SSI. The cost of medical bills associated with your disability is not covered by SSI though health coverage may be available from the Medicaid or Medicare programs for qualified individuals.
Coverage Details
SSI is a monetary support program that provides money for basic living expenses like home, clothing and food. The program is available in conjunction with other federal and state programs, including EBT benefits, Medicare and Medicaid. Recipients of SSI are allowed to work to earn income, in some cases, but income limitations exist so SSI recipients must report income to SSI and if that income is more than allowed SSI benefits will be reduced. The money delivered to SSI recipients can be used for any and all expenses. There is no system in place to track where the money is spent.
If you receive SSI benefits and you go back to work and earn more than the allowed amount your SSI benefits will stop. However, if you lose income later and you fall below the income ceiling you are instantly eligible for benefits without reapplying.
