How The Penalty Fees Work

When you do not pay your bill by the due date listed, you will incur a late fee of 1.5% per month that the payment is not brought to current status. If you are consistently late, you may be required to pay another security deposit, equal to twice the amount of the average monthly bill at the address. If the service is disconnected, you will have to pay a fee to have it reconnected, and if it must be reconnected after hours or on the weekend, the reconnect fee will be higher.

I Can’t Make A Payment

If you cannot make a payment, call customer service right away to let them know, and see what you can do to make a payment arrangement. In most cases, the company will be flexible and work with you. If you have ever missed a payment arrangement, they will not make another with you.

If you have trouble paying the bill due to the varying amounts every month, there is an “equal payment plan” that offers the same monthly payment every month, as an average of your bill across 12 months. At the end of the year, you pay the difference between the average amount and the actual use, but with this payment plan option, you cannot be late on your bill at all, or risk disconnection.

If you are having trouble paying your bill, there are many local assistance programs that may be able to help. A customer service agent may be able to help you find one that you can qualify for to get your bill paid in full and on time to avoid a disconnect.

Progress Energy offers LIHEAP home energy assistance program to customers that can’t pay your bill. This federally-funded program assists low-income customers pay your Progress Energy heating or cooling bill. In order to qualify for assistance, you must meet the requirements of the program.

Will They Work With Me To Pay My Bill?

Yes, they will! Call them as soon as possible to make arrangements. If you miss the arranged pay date, you will get turned off immediately, and will not be eligible for another payment agreement. If you have a child under the age of 6 in the home, or an elderly adult in the home over the age of 70, or who requires power to run a medical device, the power cannot be turned off in your home without permission from the Utilities Security Commission. As long as you are making payments on the past due balance and keeping customer service aware of the situation at hand, you will be able to avoid a disconnect.
