How the Penalty Fees Work

PNC does not clearly list the fees associated with overdraft and NSF occurrences, but consumer report websites have many consumer responses that give us a pretty good idea of how the company works. According to consumers, PNC is quick to charge overdraft and NSF fees, even if the amount overdrawn is just a few pennies. Many banks will refrain from charging an account if the overdrawn balance is smaller than $5 or $10. One customer reports the PNC overdraft and NSF fee is $31 per occurrence with a maximum of four charges per day.

  • Lawsuits over overdraft fees: There are some reports of consumer lawsuits against PNC for unlawful overdraft fees. According to consumers, the bank will report incorrect balances then debit accounts from greatest amount to least amount to create more NSF fees. Ideally, the bank would process payments in the order received or from least to greatest to cover more bills if there is a problem with possible overdraft. There are also reports PNC takes checks before deposits or delays deposit clearing for several days to charge customers additional NSF fees.

I Can’t Make a Payment

PNC is not available to help customers make bill payments. The company will, however, charge NSF fees at the drop of a hat, according to consumers. If the bank appears to be charging unlawful NSF or overdraft fees, contact a lawyer and stop doing business with the bank.
