How the Penalty Fees Work

  • Late payment fee: Late payment fees are assessed if your energy bill is not paid by the due date unless you’ve requested an extension through the Extended Payment plan.
  • Service fee: A service fee will be added to your account balance if your check or other form of payment is returned for insufficient funds.
  • Returned check fee: The returned check fee is added to your account in addition to the service fee. This is not the same fee your bank may charge for overdrawing your account.

I Can’t Make a Payment

While Pepco does not discuss payment arrangements on the official website, the customer service department advised us that payment arrangements are available. The company does not have set guidelines for payment plans as account history and total account balance may affect details of the payment arrangement. Other options for controlling energy bills include:

  • Budget Billing: The northeast United States is known for hot summers and cold winters. Instead of being surprised with a spike in energy bills, Pepco offers Budget Billing. Customers receive the same energy bill every month, which means higher bills during off-peak seasons, but lower bills during peak seasons.
  • Extended Payment: Customers receiving government or low-income checks monthly can request an extension of the payment due date. This accounts for the fact that checks are not typically received before the 5th of the month.
  • LIHEAP home energy assistance program: This program is available fro qualified low-income customers of Pepco. When you accept the grant, you have the ability to use the funds for heating and cooling costs.
