Will They Work With Me to Pay My Bill?

We received this helpful official statement from an Oklahoma Natural Gas representative, discussing debt forgiveness and how they work with customers who are in debt:

“We do have procedures in place to work with customers who find themselves in financial distress and have difficulty paying their bills. And your website offers the best advice: contact us early, before the past-due amounts pile up and it becomes more difficult to resolve the situation.

Generally speaking, if a customer who has been in good standing with Oklahoma Natural Gas Company contacts us and indicates that he or she may be unable to pay the full amount owed, our customer service representatives will make an effort to work out satisfactory payment arrangements that allow for the payment of the past-due amount over time. The amount of time we will allow is at our discretion, but I can tell you that three months is not uncommon.

We do assess a 1.5% penalty on unpaid balances.

The best-case resolution, of course, is that we work with the customer as soon as possible to make arrangements and get the account current. The worst-case situation is that we discontinue service to the customer. (By the way, we do not disconnect gas service in frigid weather. Our rules specify that if it is freezing or the overnight low is forecast to be 20 degrees or lower, we will not disconnect.)

Right now we are in a major effort to help our customers become more energy efficient—both to reduce their bills and also to leave a smaller carbon footprint and use energy wisely. We have a number of rebates available for customers who convert or upgrade to new, high-efficiency natural gas equipment. And we also are offering a $30 cash rebate to customers who have their heating systems inspected and adjusted by a licensed contractor. Here’s the web link: www.oklahomanaturalgas.com/rebates.
