What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Niagara Mohawk Bill

Niagara Mohawk is a National Grid company providing electricity to residents in New York. National Grid services customers in New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island with more than three million customers receiving power from the electric company in all.

How to Pay the Bill

If you have a bill due within five to seven business days you may wish to contact the customer service department to learn more about fast payment methods. Paying by mail can increase the time for processing and lead to late payment penalties.

Pay online: You can pay your Niagara Mohawk bill online at https://www1.nationalgridus.com/niagaramohawk/YourAccount/DualLogin.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fniagaramohawk%2fyouraccount%2fEnhanced_Access%2fPayOnline.aspx. You will need to register for online account access to make your payment.

Pay by credit card: Niagara Mohawk accepts credit card payments through the third-party payment processor Western Union Speedpay. You will pay a service fee of $2.25 for each payment.

Pay in person: If you’d like to drop your payment off at an in-person payment location, visit the Payment Center Locator on the Niagara Mohawk website.

Pay by mail: All Niagara Mohawk bills come with a payment envelope. If you should lose that envelope, send payment to:

National Grid
PO Box 11742
Newark, NJ 07101-4742

Questions About Your Billing Statement or Account?

If you have questions about the fees, service charges or rates listed on your Niagara Mohawk bill, visit the Electric Rates page published by the State of New York. You can also contact the service department for more information on fees at 1-800-443-1837.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Penalty fees are charged to customer accounts when payments are late or when payments are returned for insufficient funds.

  • Late payment fee: 1.5% of the past due amount charged monthly.
  • Returned payment fee: $10 per returned payment, in addition to any fees charged by your financial institution.
  • Reconnect fee: Though no specific fees are listed, Niagara Mohawk will charge customers a reconnect fee to restore service. The fee may be higher if service restoration is requested after normal business hours.

I Can’t Make a Payment

There is a complete page dedicated to Payment Assistance on the Niagara Mohawk website. Customers should contact the service department at 1-800-443-1837 if they are unable to make payment by the due date. It is best to contact a customer service representative before payment is due to prevent late payment penalty fees. Programs available from Niagara Mohawk include:

  • Bill Extender Plan
  • Care & Share Energy Fund
  • Home Energy Assistance Program
  • Hospital and Customer Assistance Plan
  • Payment Agreement
  • Third-Party Notification
  • Winter Hardship
  • Fuel Assistance

Will They Work With Me to Pay My Bill?

With so many programs available to help pay utility bills we find it hard to believe Niagara Mohawk is not willing to work with customers, but you should tell us your story.
