What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Maui Electric Bill

Maui Electric is one of several electric compannies supplying power to residents in Hawaii. Maui Electric serves the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai. Residents pay higher electricity rates because power must be generated solely for the islands. There is no interconnected power grid to pull off of like the one available to the 48 contiguous states of the United States. Higher electric rates often lead to past due bills and disconnection notices.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Penalty fees are assessed on accounts that reach past due status or accounts disconnected for non-payment. Many of the fees imposed by Maui Electric can be avoided with a simple call to customer service. Payment plans are available to help consumers catch-up on past due bills.

  • Returned payment fee: $10 per instance
  • Field collection fee: $15 per instance
  • Reconnect fee: $25 per instance
  • Same-day service reconnect: $20 in addition to the $25 reconnect fee.

If the account is disconnected for non-payment, Maui Electric requires the customer pay all bills, including past due amounts, service fees, late payment fees, etc…before service is reconnected.

I Can’t Make a Payment

According to customer service, Maui Electric offers a payment plan for customers having trouble paying electric bills. Payment plans split past due balances into smaller payments. The customer service department establishes all payment plans, so customers must contact 1-808-871-9777 for more information.

Special consideration is given to customers over the age of 62 and/or handicapped. There are special programs to prevent disconnection of electric services to residents with medical equipment requiring an electric connection.

The LIHEAP Home Energy Assistance Program offers monthly heating and cooling support to qualified applicants in all 50 states. You must apply for LIHEAP at a local office of the Department of Human Services.
