What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Citi Student Bill

Citi Student is a student loan program sponsored by Citigroup, Inc. Students can apply for loans, track student loan applications, make changes to loan accounts and manage repayment online. Repaying student loans is slightly different than repaying other bills. There are measures in place to protect students from being burdened with student loan debt. Typically, student loans repayment can be modified to meet current income and financial needs.

How to Pay the Bill

Pay online: The most effective means of repaying students loans is online bill payment. You can pay your Citi Student loan online at https://studentloan.citibank.com/s/slcsite/pay_online.asp

You must register for online account access before signing in to make a payment. It is a great idea to have online account access for student loans, especially if you are having financial difficulty. All forbearance and deferment details are available online.

Pay with auto-debit: If you enroll in the automatic payment plan, your student loan interest rate will be reduced 0.25%. Automatic payments are deducted from your bank account on the due date each month. If the money is not available in your bank account, you will likely be charged a late payment fee, returned payment fee and other charges associated with overdrawing your bank account.

Pay by phone: Phone payments are processed from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST Monday to Friday. Students should call 1-800-967-2400 to make a phone payment. Phone payments are processed quicker than mail payments.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Citi Student allows a generous 15 years to complete repayment of student loans, not including the time loans spend in deferment or forbearance. If a loan is not paid on-time, a late payment fee will be assessed. Citi Student also reserves the right to send a student loan to collection if payment is not made for 270 consecutive days. This may result in default on the loan. State and federal tax refunds can be garnished to pay for defaulted student loans.

I Can’t Make a Payment

If you can’t pay your Citi Student loan, you must contact the customer service department immediately or apply for a deferment or forbearance. If you apply for a forbearance or deferment, it is important to call customer service and report the application. The representative will note the account, which could stop collection calls.
