Blackstone Labs makes a range of bodybuilding and dietary supplements aimed at helping users burn fat and build muscle. Some of the ingredients have real research behind them, but given the company’s serious legal history — including a founder sentenced to federal prison — should regular dieters even consider these products? We looked closely at the ingredients and the company’s track record to find out.

What Is Blackstone Labs?

Blackstone Labs produces hardcore supplements aimed at mass gain, muscle building, fat cutting, and post-workout recovery. Its most popular products include Dust Extreme, Growth, Apex Male, and Brutal 4CE, typically built around caffeine anhydrous, whey protein, amino acids, hormonal compounds, and various herbal extracts.

What the Research Shows

Blackstone Labs review bodybuilding supplements
Blackstone Labs sells a range of hardcore bodybuilding supplements built around proprietary blends.

Notable Products

EpiCat (Dust Extreme line): built around epicatechin, a compound naturally found in cocoa and dark chocolate, which appears to block myostatin — a chemical that naturally limits muscle growth — by promoting the release of follistatin.

Growth: a prohormone product built around 1-C (1-carboxy-2-amino-3-pyrobenzol), a natural L-Dopa derivative claimed to cross the blood-brain barrier and support natural growth hormone production, alongside velvet bean extract, stinging nettle, and bioperine. As a proprietary blend, exact ingredient amounts aren’t disclosed.

RECOMP Rx: marketed as a non-hormonal muscle recomposition agent. A small double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 14 athletes found the group using RECOMP Rx gained an average of 3.23 pounds of lean mass over four weeks, compared to 0.78 pounds in the placebo group — a notable difference, though from a small sample size.

Dust EXTREME and King Cobra: pre-workout stimulant products containing up to 350mg of caffeine anhydrous along with citrulline malate and agmatine sulfate. The company itself advises against beginners using these due to their DMAA content, reserving them for more experienced users.

Eradicate: built around Arimistane, an aromatase inhibitor that helps preserve testosterone by blocking its conversion to estrogen, while also reducing cortisol.

Product Warnings

Blackstone Labs recommends its products only for healthy adults over 21, advises against exceeding recommended doses or using products for more than four weeks continuously, and warns against use by anyone with liver or blood pressure concerns. The company also cautions against alcohol use alongside its supplements and notes some products can affect male fertility.

This is the part potential buyers should weigh most carefully. In April 2015, the Department of Health and Human Services contacted Blackstone Labs regarding undisclosed DMBA in its Angel Dust product. In May 2017, Canadian authorities seized Dust Extreme as an unauthorized supplement. In March 2019, the company faced a 14-count federal indictment alleging it knowingly marketed and sold unsafe supplements and attempted to defraud the U.S. government and consumers. Most seriously, in February 2022, Blackstone Labs founder Phillip Braun was sentenced to 54 months in prison and ordered to forfeit $3 million for conspiracy to sell anabolic steroids and unlawful dietary supplements.

The Bottom Line on Blackstone Labs

Blackstone Labs offers some genuinely research-backed ingredients, transparent labeling on most products, and a 30-day return policy. But the company’s real, documented legal history — culminating in its founder’s federal sentencing for selling unlawful supplements — is a serious factor that should weigh heavily in any purchase decision. Anyone considering these products should proceed cautiously, review current product formulations carefully, and consult a doctor given the real regulatory concerns involved.
