What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Austin Energy Bill

Austin Energy electric company provides energy to more than 400,000 people in the Austin area. The electric company is publicly owned, so profits are given to the local community every year. Monies from Austin Energy help fund local EMS, libraries, parks and other community activities. Austin Energy produces electricity with nuclear power, coal and natural gas. Alternative energy sources also play a role in electric service with Austin Energy.

How to Pay the Bill

Austin Energy believes in diversity, so the company offers a multitude of payment options to ensure customers can make payments on-time, every time.

Mail payments: Simply place your personal check or money order in an envelope and mail to:

Pay stations: Pay stations are located in ACE Cash Express, HEB, Randall’s, Fiesta Mart and Money Box. For a full list of payment stations and addresses, visit the payment location tab on the Austin Energy website.

Drop box: Drop boxes are available for after ours and late night payments. Two drop boxes are available at:

  • 625 E 10th St
  • 505 Barton Springs Rd

Auto pay: Customers must log in to their online account to sign up for auto pay. Alternatively, customers can print the auto pay form and send it to:

Customers can call 1-512-494-9400 is they wish to enroll in Auto pay over the phone.

Phone payment: Call 1-800-959-7063 to make payment for Austin Energy by phone. There is a processing fee of $4.95 per payment. Three transactions are allowed per day with a maximum of $1,000 per transaction.

Pay online: You can pay your Austin Energy bill online at http://www.austinenergy.com/Customer%20Care/Billing/Payment%20Options/onlinePaymentServices.htm. The service is provided by CheckFree so your bank needs to support CheckFree payments. There is no fee for this service.

Questions About Your Billing Statement or Account?

Austin Energy lists rates on the Rates Summary page. Customers can find information on customer charges and solar explorer riders. A detailed fee schedule is also available. Customer service can be reached at 1-512-494-9400.

How the Penalty Fees Work

  • Same day service fee: $55
  • Disconnect fee: $20 per disconnect
  • Returned payment fee: $30
  • Trip fee: $75
  • Meter tampering: $106.80

I Can’t Make a Payment

  • Budget billing: Customers can have the previous 12 months averaged for calculate the bill amount on the budget billing program. Payments are paired against actual usage regularly to ensure the customer is not overpaying or underpaying for electric.
  • Payment arrangement: Austin Energy will work with customers have trouble making a payment. The payment arrangement program is for temporary financial trouble only. The customer must pay the current energy charges in addition to the agreed upon payment plan amount. If financial troubles are not just temporary, customers should contact local and state government agencies for low-income energy assistance.
  • LIHEAP: Low-income Austin Energy customers may qualify for LIHEAP. In order to qualify for LIHEAP, customers need to prove financial need with income statements. Learn more about how to qualify for energy assistance with LIHEAP.

Payment arrangements through Austin Energy require 1/3 of the total due as a down payment. The remaining balance is paid in four equal installments.
