What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your AES Bill

AES or American Education Service is a payment processor for the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). You cannot apply for student loans directly from AES, but AES may manage some or all of your federal student loans.

How to Pay the Bill

Pay with direct debit: Going green is a big part of the AES program. Students and parents can sign up for e-billing services with direct debit to reduce the impact of paper billing and check payments on the environment. If payments are placed on the direct debit payment plan, payments are directly taken from your bank account each month on the due date.

Pay by smart phone: If you have a smart phone you can access your online AES bill pay account via your Internet browser. From the mobile website you can make payments on your student loans as a whole. If you wish to send a particular amount to specific loans, you must access your account online from a personal computer.

Pay online: You can pay your AES bill online at http://www.aessuccess.org/manage/repaying_your_loan/ways_to_pay/index.shtml. Access is granted after you complete registration. Registration is free. Payments can be broken up and dedicated to specific loans and scheduled up to 60 days in the future.

Pay by phone: Phone payments are processed at 1-800-233-0557. The service is available 24 hours a day.

Pay by mail: Money order and personal check payments are accepted by mail. Check payments are processed electronically.

Questions About Your Billing Statement or Account?

Have you noticed charges such as late payment fees, collection charges or interest rate spikes that you do not understand? For a detailed explanation of fees and charges, we recommend you visit the AES resource page. You also have the ability to contact customer service at 1-800-233-0557 for additional information regarding your AES billing statement or account.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Late payment fee: When you pay your AES loans, the payment first covers the interest on the account with the remaining amount reducing the principal on the account. If your payment is late, the payment will first cover the late payment fee, then the interest and finally the principal amount.

I Can’t Make a Payment

If you can’t make a payment for your AES student loans, you need to contact the service department immediately. Options for reducing loan payments and reducing financial burden of student loan payments include:

  • Changing the due date
  • Reducing payments based on current income
  • Extending the repayment time frame to reduce payments
  • Postponing payments
  • Consolidating loans

If you do not contact AES, your loan will be charged late payment fees and could end up in default status. Collection activity may include garnishing wages and taking tax refund payments.

Will They Work With Me to Pay My Bill?

We’ve heard fantastic things about AES working with students and parents to create a loan repayment program that causes less financial impact on the family. Did it work with you during times of financial struggle?
