What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your First Energy Bill

The First Energy corporation is the mother electric company for 10 companies serving the northeast United States. The companies operating under First Energy are:

• Ohio Edison
• Cleveland Illuminating Company
• Toledo Edison
• Jersey Central Power & Light
• Met-Ed
• Penelec
• Penn Power
• West Penn Power
• Mon Power
• Potomac Edison

Each company has a different set of rules, regulations, rates and service fees.

How to Pay the Bill

If you are a current First Energy customer, you have several options for making your utility bill payment.

Pay online: You can pay your First Energy bill online at https://www.firstenergycorp.com/log_in.html. You have to register for online account access, but registration is free and takes only a couple minutes. Make sure to enter a valid email address during the registration process.

Pay by phone: Customers have the option of making bill payment by phone for some First Energy companies. Visit the First Energy Contact Center https://www.firstenergycorp.com/corporate/Contact_Centers.html to choose the proper phone number for your providing company.

Pay by mail: You will receive a payment envelope with your First Energy company bill. Use that envelope to mail payment to the corresponding company. If you’ve lost the mailing envelope, use the address printed on the front of the bill.

I Can’t Make a Payment

The customer service department will work with customers having trouble making electric payments on-time. Most often, a payment plan will be setup (a down payment may be required) to reduce the size of your bill, but current charges will be due in addition to the payment plan payment. If you break a payment arrangement you could be held responsible for paying the total balance due immediately or face service interruption.

LIHEAP: LIHEAP is a low-income program offered by the federal government. Monies are provided to state governments to divvy out to low-income utility customers.
