What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your HECO Bill
HECO, Hawaiian Electric Company is the parent company of Maui Electric Company (MECO) and Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO). The company provides services for more than 1.2 million customers or approximately 95% of all residents of Hawaii.
How to Pay the Bill
Pay online: Customer can pay your HECO bill online by visiting https://mycheckfree.com/br/wps?rq=bfquickenroll&esc=68976918&sp=10001. Acceptable methods of payment include credit card and debit card. No service fees apply to your payment.
Pay by phone: Customers can pay your HECO bill by phone by calling customer service at 1-888-813-2207. Acceptable methods of payment include electronic check, debit card and credit card. Convenience fees apply with each transaction.

Payment in person: Customers can pay your HECO bill in person by visiting a Foodland, Sack ‘n Save or First Hawaiian Bank. Payments incur a service fee with each transaction.

How the Penalty Fees Work
HECO charges fees for late payments, returned checks, reconnection and collection notification. HECO grants exceptions for customers that are over the age of 62 or handicapped. HECO must be notified of the customer’s circumstances prior to termination of service.
- Late payment – A fee of 1% of the unpaid balance is added to the current amount due.
- Returned check – Payments returned by your financial institution incur a $16 fee per occurrence.
- Collection – When a representative of HECO visits the home of a customer to collect an unpaid balance, HECO charges the customer $20. The amount is added to the subsequent HECO bill.
- Reconnection – When service is reconnected, HECO charges a fee of $45.
I Can’t Make a Payment
When we spoke to customer service, they provided us with useful resources for customers that can’t pay your HECO bill. The initial step is for customers to call customer service at:

HECO will work with you to set up a payment arrangement. They also provided us with information regarding payment protection. This service covers your HECO bill for approximately two months in the event you or a family member losses employment, totally disabled or on a leave of absence.
