What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your PSEG Bill
PSEG is a New Jersey electric company established in 1903. Today the company employs more than 10,000 people and earns an average of nearly $12 billion per year. Four companies operate under the PSEG name: Public Service Electric and Gas Company, PSEG Power, PSEG Energy Holdings and PSEG Services Corporation.
How to Pay the Bill
PSEG offers customers multiple options for paying bills, including online services.
Pay online: If you want to pay your PSEG bill online, simply visit your MyAccount page at https://myaccount.pseg.com/amserver/UI/Login?realm=pseg&goto=http%3A%2F%2Fmyportal.pseg.com%3A50000%2Firj%2Fportal. You must first sign-up for an online account to manage your PSEG services.
Pay automatically: Automatic payments can be addressed from your MyAccount page. Your bill payment will be deducted from the payment option you select online the same date every month.
Pay by phone: Customer service agents are available to take phone payments at 1-800-553-7734.
Pay in person: In-person bill payments are accepted at several locations, including:

The Understanding your PSE&G Energy Bill page offers information on supply charges, distribution charges and some fees. For more detailed information, customers can call the customer service department at 1-800-436-7734.
How the Penalty Fees Work
PSEG does not clearly list penalty fees on the main website, but we found a brochure from the company online listing several fees, including:
- Late payment charge: Customers not paying bills on-time are subject to a 1.416% late payment charge. The total fee is based on the billed amount.
- Returned check fee: PSEG charges $15 per returned check. This fee is will be charged in addition to any bank fees charged by your bank.
- Field collection charge: If PSEG sends a collection agent to your home, a service charge of $30 will be added to the total amount due.
I Can’t Make a Payment
PSEG does not list any information about payment arrangements. The customer service department directed us to the website for more information on payment assistance programs offered by New Jersey and PSEG.
- LIHEAP: LiHeap home energy assistance program is available to PSEG customers living in New Jersey. Customers can call 1-800-510-3102 for more information on the LIHEAP program. Customers must meet certain income guidelines to receive assistance.
- USF: When applying for the LiHeap program, customers are also applying for USF. This program offers between $5 and $150 per month in energy assistance to qualified families. Qualification is based on income, other benefits received and energy usage.
- Elderly customers: Elderly PSEG customers and customers with health problems may qualify for NJ Lifeline. The program offers a $225 credit once a year if they meet income guidelines. Customers between 18 and 65 can also qualify if disabled.
- NJ Shares: NJ Shares is an outside program available to help consumers pay their PSEG bill. Income guidelines are less stringent, but the program runs out of money quickly due to lax income guidelines.
